Taxis at Termini station: where the ranks are and how long you wait
Termini is where more taxis are taken than anywhere else in Rome, and also where it is easiest to get it wrong. Here are the three ranks, the prices to the most common destinations, and what to do when the queue is long.
The three taxi ranks at Termini
Piazza dei Cinquecento
The main rank, in front of the central entrance and next to the bus terminus. It has the most cars and the most people: at busy times staff keep the queue in order.
Via Marsala
At the side entrance on the Castro Pretorio side, the exit towards platform 1. It often has a shorter queue than the main square and suits anyone arriving on the high-numbered platforms.
Via Giolitti
On the opposite side, around number 10, near the via Giolitti entrance and the metro. Smaller, and handy for Esquilino and San Giovanni.
At a rank you take the first car in the queue. Inside the station, on the platforms and along the pavements of via Marsala, anyone touting a ride out loud is not a taxi driver: licensed taxis are white, with TAXI on the roof and a licence number on the doors, and they do not go looking for customers.

Short rides in the centre still cost the €9 minimum fare. At night the flag fall rises to €7.50, so add €4 to the estimates; on Saturdays and public holidays add €1.50. Run the numbers again with the fare calculator.
When the queue is long
- Try via Marsala: it sometimes has free cars while piazza dei Cinquecento is still waiting.
- Call 06 3570 or 06 6645 from the train and give a precise address to be picked up at — via Marsala 42, for instance. The driver comes to you instead of joining the rank queue, and as you get in the meter cannot exceed the flag fall plus €5.
- For Fiumicino with light luggage, the Leonardo Express leaves from platforms 23-24 every 15 minutes and costs €14.
- On strike days only certain hours are covered: check before you arrive.
Getting back to Termini
Coming the other way, Termini counts as inside the Aurelian Walls, so the flat fares to the airports apply in both directions. If the hotel is in the streets around the station, give the driver the street and house number rather than "Termini": the one-way system around piazza dei Cinquecento can add several minutes on the meter. Get in only at an official rank, in the first car in the queue, and ignore anyone offering a ride inside the station or on the platforms. Check the meter is running, or that the route has a flat fare, pay by card if you prefer, and ask for the receipt.
Is there a surcharge for luggage at the station?
The first bag is free; from the second onwards it is €1 each if it is larger than 35×25×50 cm. There is no station surcharge, no night surcharge and no holiday surcharge on the meter — only the flag fall changes at night.
